The Dark Side of the Early Internet

It’s Time to Speak Out
MSN Messenger. Bebo. MySpace. Yahoo Chat. Just to name a few…
For many of us, these were just fun places to connect—where we made friends, shared music, and spent hours chatting with strangers. But for others, these platforms became something much darker.
We were not warned.
We were not protected.
Many of us were groomed.
And most of us never spoke about it.
It is time to speak out.
The Forgotten Reality of Online Grooming
Online grooming did not start with modern social media. It has been happening for decades. The difference? Back then, there were no viral awareness campaigns, no online safety warnings, and no parental controls.
Young people were left to navigate these spaces without guidance.
- Strangers were added to MSN contact lists.
- Chat rooms were full of unknown people.
- Friend requests were accepted without hesitation.
- The focus was on avoiding strangers in person—but no one warned about online dangers.
For some, this led to manipulation, exploitation, and grooming. And for years, these experiences have been buried, ignored, and forgotten.
The Grooming Files – A Survivor-Led Movement
This is why The Grooming Files has been launched.
It is a space dedicated to survivors of historical online grooming—those who lived through it on platforms such as MSN, Bebo, MySpace, and early forums but never had the chance to speak about it.
- Collecting survivor stories—shared anonymously or openly.
- Exposing how grooming worked in the past—to educate and raise awareness.
- Creating a movement—to finally break the silence.
Your story matters. It deserves to be heard.

This project is for adults (18+) reflecting on past experiences.
It is not for reporting current cases involving minors.
Why This Matters Now
The internet has changed, but grooming has not stopped—it has only evolved.
The same tactics used on MSN and Bebo are now happening on Instagram, Snapchat, Discord, and gaming platforms etc. By sharing our experiences, we are:
- Raising awareness for those who never realised what happened to them.
- Creating a space for survivors to speak freely.
- Documenting this history so it is never ignored again.
It is time to break the silence.
If this resonates with you, please share. There are people out there who need to see this.
