A 17-year-old girl was rescued from the edge of a motorway flyover in Newport on Saturday evening — and was later arrested on suspicion of carrying a weapon.

The incident took place on the A4051 flyover above the M4, near Malpas Fire Station, and led to the closure of major junctions 25A and 26 in both directions. Emergency services were called to the scene at around 6:55pm on Saturday 19 July, following reports of a concern for the girl’s safety.

Images shared on social media showed the girl standing on the outside edge of the bridge barrier, visibly distressed, while officers engaged with her from the walkway.

She was brought to safety, and the motorway was reopened shortly after.
