A Feathery Tale of Compassion: Rescuing Rosie Cheeks

A few days ago, while casually browsing through my Facebook feed, a post caught my attention—someone I know mentioned an injured pigeon frequenting their garden. With a deep love for animals, particularly birds, I felt compelled to step in and offer assistance.
Having been involved in bird rescues in the past, I decided to pick up the pigeon the next day, fully intending to take it to the local wildlife centre.
However, memories of a previous rescue weighed heavily on my mind. The unfortunate fate of the last bird I had rescued left me hesitant, with doubts creeping in about the effectiveness of wildlife centres.
Unable to shake these concerns, I made the decision to bring the injured pigeon home instead.
Upon arriving, the pigeon wasted no time making itself at home, finding refuge in the warmth of my bedroom fireplace. With three (sometimes four) dogs in the household, ensuring the pigeon’s safety became a priority. Despite their gentle nature and familiarity with my mother’s parrot, I knew additional precautions were necessary.
Examining the pigeon more closely, I discovered a damaged wing that rendered flight nearly impossible. Yet, despite this setback, the pigeon displayed remarkable resilience and contentment, revelling in the comforts of food, warmth, and affection.
Recognising the need for a safer environment, we relocated the pigeon to our son’s attic bedroom. However, this newfound sanctuary soon became a battleground of feathers, poop, and scattered food—a testament to the pigeon’s lively spirit.
My daughter, quick to embrace our new guest, affectionately named her Rosie Cheeks—a fitting moniker for her cheerful demeanour. Gender ambiguity notwithstanding, we couldn’t help but entertain the possibility of Rosie being a Roberto Cheeks. But for now, Rosie Cheeks it is, her playful antics bringing joy amidst the chaos.
After much deliberation, we settled on a temporary solution—a cage in the kitchen until we can create a proper aviary in the garden.
Now, Rosie Cheeks enjoys the freedom to explore our home, returning to her cage each night without complaint.
Despite her physical limitations, Rosie Cheeks embodies the essence of resilience and happiness, teaching us valuable lessons about compassion and companionship.
In her presence, our home has been transformed into a haven of warmth and love, each day enriched by the presence of our beloved feathered friend.
