Can Democracy Truly Exist in a World Led by Dictatorship?

The Western world proudly waves the banner of democracy, boasting about the freedoms and opportunities it offers. But let’s pause and ask ourselves: Is this democracy real, or is it merely an illusion? The truth is, what we experience daily feels more like a dictatorship in disguise, where control and oppression are masked as freedom and choice.
Did you agree to living in the rat race?
Did you sign up to spend your life chasing after a paycheque, only to realise that you’re running on a treadmill going nowhere? A life where your worth is dictated by a system that values profit over people?
Did you agree to give up all your human rights?
Our rights are eroded daily, often under the guise of security and democracy. But did you ever consent to this? Did you agree to a government that dictates where you live, how much you earn, and how you should think?
Did you agree to give up free speech under the guise of democracy?
We’re told we live in a society where free speech is a fundamental right. Yet, how often do we see voices silenced, opinions censored, and truths buried because they don’t align with the narrative of those in power?
Do you agree to wars and famines?
Wars are waged in our names, yet how many of us actually consented to them? Families are torn apart, children starve, and entire nations crumble—all while we are told it’s for our safety or for democracy.
Do you agree to children being ripped from their loving families while we fight a war that was never even in the interest of the people?
How many lives must be destroyed before we realise that these wars are not for us? They serve the interests of the powerful, while ordinary people bear the cost.
Did you agree to live in oppression? Suppressed by those we gave up our own powers to?
We handed over our power, trusting in a system that promised us freedom. Instead, we’ve found ourselves oppressed, our potential suppressed by those we once believed would protect us.
Did you agree that it’s okay to suppress and demand taxes, poor nutrition, and starving children?
Taxes rise, social services dwindle, and the gap between the rich and the poor widens. Did you agree that this is the price we must pay for living in a so-called democracy?
Did you agree that some people are better off locked up 23 hours a day because the system is broken and there’s no help for those who’ve been drowned in suppression and depression?
Our prisons are filled with people society has failed. Mental health support is lacking, and those who need help the most are often left to fend for themselves, leading to desperate actions and broken lives.
Did you really choose the life you are living today?
When you take a step back and look at your life, can you honestly say that this is what you chose? Or were you guided, nudged, and forced into a path laid out by a system that never had your best interests at heart?
Would you make different choices if they were available to you?
If you had the real freedom to choose, would your life look the same? Or would you break free from the chains of this so-called democracy and carve out a different path for yourself?
As Charlie Chaplin famously said in The Great Dictator:
“We all want to help one another. Human beings are like that. We want to live by each other’s happiness—not by each other’s misery.”
Yet, here we are, living in a world where misery is all too common, dictated by those who claim to offer us freedom. We were promised a democracy that would empower us, a society where our voices would matter, and our choices would shape our lives. But the reality is starkly different.
So, can democracy truly exist in a world where dictatorship takes the reins and leads? If our lives are dictated by forces beyond our control, if our freedoms are illusions, then what we are living in is not democracy—it’s a modern form of dictatorship, dressed up to keep us complacent.
It’s time to ask ourselves: Are we truly free, or are we simply following a script written by those in power? And if we had the power to rewrite that script, would we dare to change the ending?
