“Donna’s Unyielding Odyssey: Conquering COVID, Tracheostomy, and the Essence of Resilience”

In December 2021, Donna’s life took an unforeseen turn as she confronted her deepest fear—contracting COVID-19. What followed was a gripping saga, chronicling her journey through illness, survival, and the uncharted territories of a tracheostomy. This is Donna’s story in its entirety, a narrative woven with courage, setbacks, and the profound realisation of life’s fragility.

The Battle with COVID-19:

Every day, Donna grappled with high fever, delirium, and the terrifying fear of hospitalisation. Struggling to breathe and vomiting, she reached a critical point by day 10, prompting a rushed hospital admission. Frightened and alone, Donna faced the stark reality of COVID’s severity.

“I was terrified of ending up in the hospital.”

Ventilator and Coma:

In the hospital, Donna’s condition worsened, leading to a pivotal moment when a doctor presented her with an iPad, asking if she wanted to leave a message for her family. The possibility of being placed on a ventilator loomed, and Donna’s resolute decision reflected her determination to survive. For 14 days, she remained in a coma, battling COVID Pneumonia and bilateral pneumothorax.

“I couldn’t walk, move, eat, or drink and was fed through a tube.”

Road to Recovery:

Upon emerging from the coma, Donna faced the Herculean task of rebuilding her life. Confined to a hospital bed, she navigated hallucinations, confusion, and the harsh reality of her physical limitations. Gradually, she relearned basic functions, starting with a teaspoon of apple puree.

“I was determined to get home… I wanted to try and walk, I did with a Zimmer frame around ITU!”

Unexpected Complications:

Recovery took an unexpected turn when Donna’s vocal cords collapsed, necessitating a tracheostomy. The complications extended further with a hospital-acquired pneumonia post-surgery. Donna’s resilience shone as she faced her biggest fear—nine days of speechlessness.

“Covid, the gift that kept on giving!”

Life with a Tracheostomy:

August 2023 marked a new chapter with the tracheostomy. Donna’s struggle with acceptance and the challenging recovery were compounded by the profound changes to her life—no more singing, crying, or swimming. Yet, she embraced life, fighting each day to live beyond mere existence.

“I am alive and continue to fight every day.”

Gratitude and Support:

Donna found solace in the outpouring of love, well-wishes, and prayers from friends, family, and even strangers. The global community’s support, including church and Hindu prayers, became a source of strength, emphasising the interconnectedness of human spirit.

“I feel blessed to have been given a 2nd chance.”

Life’s New Rhythms:

Adapting to life as a “patient,” Donna created new routines—medications, nebulising, and frequent tube changes. Despite the slowed pace, she practiced gratitude, mindfulness, and shared love with those who mattered. Donna’s role extended beyond personal recovery, offering support to others through a worldwide trache group.

“Life is precious, exhilarating, painful, joyous but oh so worth the effort.”

A Voice of Inspiration:

Within her tracheostomy support group, Donna’s positivity resonated deeply. A member expressed, “How many days have I woken up feeling down because I have a trach, then I read your posts and felt better, ready to take on the day.” Donna’s response to all is a call to seize the second chance, appreciate the small joys, and recognise life’s preciousness.

“To anyone being given a 2nd chance grab it with both hands, believe in yourself, you are stronger than you ever thought.”

An Honorable Mention:

Donna is one of the most inspiring people I’ve had the pleasure of meeting. Her strength and determination are profound. I’m honoured to have met her and now call her a friend.
