Farewell Mildred: A Journey of Impulsive Choices and Unscripted Living

Yesterday marked the end of a unique chapter in our lives as we bid farewell to our beloved caravan, Mildred. Living in her for just over a year was a bittersweet experience, filled with challenges and moments that tested our resilience.
In Mildred, we embraced a lifestyle without running water, relying on 5-litre bottles, and faced the cold with only a calor gas fire. Our cosy haven lacked a bathroom, substituting a portable loo and a brisk walk to a less-than-ideal shower block. Seven occupants—four humans and three dogs—navigated the confines of a tiny tourer caravan.
Our connection with Mildred began as an impulsive choice—a deviation from a last-minute decision to pull out of a house purchase that didn’t feel right. She wasn’t just a caravan; she was a leap of faith, a decision made wholeheartedly.
Transitioning from Mildred to our newly renovated house, equipped with all the comforts we once yearned for, should have been a joyous occasion. Yet, as we settled into the warmth and convenience, an unexpected wave of sadness washed over us.
My boyfriend’s visit to Mildred today revealed an unexpected truth: she exuded a sense of melancholy. The realization hit hard, and tears flowed freely as I grappled with the deep-seated connection we had forged with our nomadic home.
In an effort to preserve the memories and essence of Mildred, we’ve decided to keep her in our lives. Frequent visits will allow us to revisit the simplicity and authenticity she symbolised. However, the inevitable parting looms on the horizon.
Mildred is more than a caravan; she’s a testament to living life unscripted. We defied societal expectations, creating our own haven and infusing it with personality. The initial moments of despair, unravelling a web of problems and brokenness, were countered with love, dedication, and a substantial financial investment.
Our journey with Mildred, costing us approximately £20k, including ground rent, was not just a monetary investment; it was a sacrifice, a testament to the unforeseen challenges we faced. She became our hub of love and prosperity, a canvas on which we painted the story of crafting our own nook in the world.
As we embark on the next chapter in our renovated house, Mildred’s legacy remains etched in our hearts—a reminder of the power of saying no to societal norms and embracing a life lived on our terms. Farewell, Mildred, and thank you for being an integral part of our unscripted adventure and the impulsive choices that shaped our destiny.
